About The Writer

Pam Macri wrote Awakened By Hate, a fiction based on true events.

I have been a writer for 25 years, focusing on short stories and marketing materials. I am most proud of a cookbook that I wrote and dedicated to my late mom who was a phenomenal cook. Awakened by Hate is my latest work, a fictional story based on actual events around police brutality and corruption.

I have been a writer for 25 years, focusing on short stories and marketing materials. I am most proud of a cookbook that I wrote and dedicated to my late mom who was a phenomenal cook. Awakened by Hate is my latest work, a fictional story based on actual events around police brutality and corruption.

As a result of the experience detailed in Awakened by Hate, I work to change the laws to support those diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is my duty to be an advocate because of my personal experience with PTSD and how it affects individuals, their families, and to create and educate into police training programs. This disorder is greatly underestimated, and I am working tirelessly to make it a priority in legislation and stop the inhumanity that has happened.

When I am not writing or advocating, I work in the Project Management sector teaching continuous improvement and a Six Sigma Blackbelt problem-solving professional. I enjoy gardening, especially roses. I love cooking, a fond memory that my late mother passed down to me, and a way to keep her spirit alive. I live in the Midwest with my husband and our two dogs.

my why - why did i write this book

Grace struggles with being loving until she is overwhelmed by anger and feeling desperate.

I want to share why I wrote Awakened By Hate.

Everyone has a story. Some never talk about their stories, others perhaps overshare, while others tell their stories through their actions. These actions range from kindness, volunteerism, support, love, to hate, and even destruction.

Awakened By Hate, is fiction, yet inspired by real events. I grew up in a Midwestern city and enjoyed a pretty fantastic childhood. I was raised by a mother who loved me unconditionally and taught me to be inclusive to others, especially when people were mistreated through unkind words or actions.

As an adult, I had the opportunity to return and live in my hometown. I was excited to “come home” and begin my new life with my fiance. The events that you will read about in Awakened By Hate are based on real events. These events that happened in an instant quickly turned that homecoming into a nightmare, fraught with police brutality, a maze of political dead-ends, and untruths. The ensuing months trying to understand and navigate what happened will forever be etched in my mind, and have truly changed my life forever.

My fiance and I both were exposed to a world we honestly did not know existed. Understanding what was happening was almost unfathomable. Processing how to make sense of our new normal and navigate through the rhetoric, empty promises, and at times raw fear, was daunting at best.

I wrote Awakened By Hate to share how anger and fear can paralyze you if you allow it to take over. It can destroy you and render you powerless. The stages of terror, feeling helpless, and projecting your anger on others can be overcome when you find the strength to stand up for what you know to be right, no matter who you are confronting. Resilience, taking your power back, and finding the courage will eventually bring you through any situation with Grace, who happens to be the book’s main character and dignity.

This book is for anyone who has gone through a painful experience or knows someone who is having difficulty getting through hate, fear, and anger. My message to everyone, no matter your age, your financial situation, religion, or political beliefs, is to keep going. You will stray, want to stay in bed, and let the world go on without you. Keep going. Remember who you are, always. Hold on. Breathe. Listen to your heart and believe that you can survive even in the darkest hours because you will.

I believe in you.

Grace & Dignity,

Pam Macri

Kirkus Review - (Long Review)

"A subdued look at the domestic effects of police brutality."

In Macri’ debut novel, a man’s vicious roadside arrest and wrongful incarceration upend his and his fiancee’s lives.

Coming home from a relative’s wedding, Grace Manning finds her Jackman, Michigan, house empty. There’s no sign of her fiance, Michael McKensie, and the answering machine had recorded an attempted collect call from the local jail. Grace is shocked to learn that Michael was arrested. According to police, he had resisted arrest and physically assaulted officers after they pulled over his car. Grace believes Michael’s assertion that the police attacked him without cause, though he admits that he had been drinking that night. Michael’s initial claim, however, is supported by footage from the cops’ dashcam, which shows officers repeatedly tasing and beating Michael without provocation. Unfortunately, Michael’s conviction on multiple charges and subsequent jail time are unavoidable, and Grace searches for ways to reduce his sentence, from appealing his conviction to a civil rights complaint. She struggles on her own, so distraught that she neglects her health and finances. Prison poses multiple dangers and hurdles, like an inmate who threatens Grace during her visits. In the days and months that follow, Grace, who believes the cops’ actions were fueled by hate, strives to avoid succumbing to a bitter rage.

According to the author, real-life events inspired her novel. Macri’s unadorned prose gives the story a sense of realism, and Grace’s breezy first-person account sets her up as sympathetic: “Michael was in prison with people who were killers, and he was not one of them. He was now going to be subjected to bunking with rapists, robbers, and thrashers—weapons and all! Really!” Race is not a central theme here (Michael is White); instead, the author concentrates on the police officers’ frightening lack of accountability. For example, one cop who’s caught on the dashcam video joking that his wrist is sore—ostensibly from beating Michael—later claims his broken hand is proof of Michael’s criminal noncompliance. Still, most of the novel studies the effects his incarceration has on the couple. As such, there’s little insight into Michael’s time behind bars, although readers learn of his PTSD—likely from the violent arrest and definitely from his abusive childhood. The plot grows darker as it follows Grace’s attempts to cope, revealing the many ways, in addition to physical harm, that police brutality can wreck families. There are likewise unsettling implications of authorities covering up their wrongdoing; Grace peruses Michael’s court file and believes someone has altered a cop’s transcribed testimony. Fortunately, Grace’s confidence is often inspiring; even her more negative sentiments aren’t defeatist: “I have some busted angel wings, a broken heart, a middle finger that many drivers have seen.”
